What’s the Job?

Uplift Games is the studio behind Adopt Me, the premiere pet adoption game on Roblox (33B+ sessions, 1.92 million record CCU). We are a small team with a huge community, so to push the limits of scale and quality, we are building out our in-house legal team.

You will be our first in-house legal hire and you will be responsible for overseeing all legal aspects of our business and formalizing Legal as a discipline and department. You will collaborate with key members of our team to provide legal solutions which inform how we fulfill our mission of “Creating Future Nostalgia” for our millions of players.

A primary focus will be to safeguard, expand and license our intellectual property. You will also oversee our trademark portfolios, and manage corporate compliance. You’ll offer strong initiative and sound judgment, with the ability to work independently in a creative and disruptive industry while effectively ensuring legal conformity and minimizing probability of exposure. Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of individuals and groups in a cross-functional context are a must. We are open to hiring for this role in either the US or UK. For US candidates, this will be fully remote. UK candidates should be aware that this is a hybrid position with 1-2 days per week in our London office, so preference will be given to candidates within a commutable distance of London. You must be able to demonstrate eligibility to work in the UK or US.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Safeguard, expand and license the extensive intellectual property of the Adopt Me universe, including developing a strategy for brand protection .
  • Responsible for overseeing our trademark portfolio for both Adopt Me and Uplift Games, in collaboration with specialist external advisors
  • Draft and negotiate commercial contracts and legal agreements for strategic partnerships, including working alongside our Game Development, Consumer Products and Multimedia teams
  • Support and advise Uplift Games in connection with corporate governance and general transactional work
  • Oversee the legal function of Uplift Games’ US and UK subsidiaries, including acting as the first line of support and escalating to specialist attorneys (e.g., tax, employment, privacy) as needed
  • Manage the full life-cycle of entity management for Uplift Games, including ensuring compliance with applicable corporate formalities, corporate governance and other local legal requirements
  • Direct and coordinate compliance with applicable data protection and advertising regulations
  • Anticipate and support the continuous improvement of Uplift Games’ legal processes

Your Background

These are the things candidates really should have but can make up for in other areas. If you’re missing one or two, consider applying anyway, especially if you belong to a marginalized group.

If you are based in the US:

  • Licensed attorney in good standing with at least one state bar
  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school

If you are based in the UK:

  • Qualified solicitor with a minimum of six years experience, to include some in-house

All candidates:

  • A strong focus on intellectual property law
  • Track record of providing general legal advice across the business
  • Prior experience in a gaming, entertainment or media company, or a combination
  • Experienced negotiator with external parties
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with partners and internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly research and analyse situations and information, with a focus on practical solutions and an understanding of legal risks
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of corporate law and procedures as well as data privacy compliance including GDPR and COPPA
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity

Bonus Points

These are things that can improve your candidacy, but none of these are necessary to apply.

  • Experience in entertainment and Intellectual Property law
  • Experience in an international environment - if based in the US, it will be an advantge of have experience of UK law, or vice versa if you are based in the UK
  • Interest and familiarity with legal issues facing technology companies with a customer base that includes minors

What’s the Compensation?

When possible, we provide transparent estimated salary ranges to set expectations early and to respect your time.

We recognize, however, that salaries vary within our various remote geographical locations. To give an indication of the salary level for this role, we estimate the annual salary will be as follows for these example locations:

  • New York, NY: $125,000 - $155,000 USD
  • Dallas, TX: $100,000 - $130,000 USD
  • London, UK: £80,000 - £120,000 GBP
